5 Ways to Stimulate your Senses and Align Your Chakras

Are you in a rut? Feeling down and disconnected? Are you feeling emotionally and physically drained? Having a hard time concentrating, connecting with others, and expressing yourself? Don’t panic and do not reach for the medicine cabinet. Try these fun ways to get centered and aligned quickly.

The five activities on this list are designed to stimulate your senses, balance your chakras, and bring awareness to the body. To experience a complete alignment I recommend that you practice them all in one sitting. However, if you are short on time, feel free to pick and choose whichever resonates with you the most. You can mix up the order of each action based on how you are feeling. The best way to practice these meditations is  to intuitively engage in them for as long as you feel necessary.

  1. Run your hands trough cold water
  • Sense: Touch
  • Chakra: Anahata (Heart)
  • Practice when “Feeling” angry, nervous, anxious and disconnected.

Place a small container under the tap and turn on the cold water. Place your hands palms down under the running water for a few seconds. Imagine that the water is washing away all excess and uneasy energy. Feel your anxiety, frustration, anger and any other negative emotions being washed away from your hands. Turn off the tap and soak your hands on the water that collected in the bucket. Feel the coldness literally cooling your emotions down. Imagine the water turning a bright emerald green purifying you and healing any imbalances.

2. Ring a bell over the crown of your head.

  • Sense: Listening
  • Chakra: Vishudda (Throat)
  • Practice when having trouble expressing, listening, and understanding yourself and others.

Sit comfortably with your back straight and feet planted on the ground. Grab a small bell like the one pictured above, and ring it over the crown of your head. Close your eyes and focus on the sound waves and vibrations emanating from the ringing. Picture the sound entering your body and circling around your throat and ears. Let the vibration push out any thoughts and blockages. As the sound continues to ring in your head, feel the space  inside growing and the emptiness slowly being filled with a vibrant blue light.

Don’t have a bell, singing bowl or similar item? Try humming deeply and intensely. Close your mouth. Keeping your lips together, hum “Mmmmmm”. Let the sound flow freely, deeply and intensely. Do not stop to take a breath or interrupt the length. Allow your body to naturally set the length and speed of the humming.

Bonus: If you do have a bell, do both the ringing and humming for an extra punch!

3. Look at a mandala, yantra or a beautiful nature scene.

  • Sense: Sight
  • Chakra: Manipura (Solar plexus)
  • Practice when worried, concerned, and when you are “Not Seeing” the solution to a problem.

Pick a photo of a mandala, yantra, flowers, animals, landscapes or any other scene from nature that makes you feel safe and relaxed. Place it directly in front of you at a distance that is easy to see at eye level. Sit comfortably, feet flat on the ground, and place your hands over your belly. Picture a warm yellow glow flowing from your hands and soothing your tummy. Imagine your hands are holding a small sun and the sunshine is radiating warmly on your navel area, making you feel warm, safe and cozy. Now, fix your gaze softly and lazily on the photo. Relax your eyes and observe all the colors, details and lines. Close your eyes and picture what you just saw in your mind’s eye. Hold that image for a couple of seconds, open your eyes and repeat. Do this until the worry and related emotions have “melted” by your own inner light and vision.

4. Diffuse essential oils or light up incense and breathe in and out trough alternate nostrils.

  • Sense: Smell
  • Chakra: Muladhara (Root)
  • Practice when feeling drained and sluggish, insecure, spacey, cannot concentrate, and feel distracted by lust and fantasy. In other words, you are residing in La-La land.

Try the Pranayama breathing technique for a couple of counts on each side. Using your right hand, let your thumb close off the right nostril then EXHALE and INHALE on the left nostril. Next close off the left nostril with your ring finger and EXHALE and INHALE trough the right nostril. Focus intensely on your breath. Visualize your brain being oxygenated and your blood pumping and flowing strongly trough your veins. Ground and center yourself into your body.

Scents that will help you ground and balance the chakra include  Patchouli, Myrrh, Primrose, Cinnamon and Frankincense.

5. Eat a piece of chocolate or fruit slowly.

  • Sense: Taste
  • Chakra: Swadhisthana (Sacral)
  • Practice when feeling scared or bored. If you are experiencing a lack of creativity and passion.

This one is both easy and delicious! Take a piece of chocolate, fruit or candy and slowly bright it to your moth. Touch it with your lips, feel the texture and smell it. Next pop it inside your mouth and let it sit on your tongue. Feel the texture and really taste it. Is it bitter or sweet. Is it smooth or bumpy? Dry or juicy?  Imagine it is your first time eating this, how would you describe it? Mentally annotate each feeling and emotion the flavor is creating in you. Take another piece of a different fruit or candy. Compare and contrast. What does it remind you off? Are any memories being awakened in you?

I personally practice these meditations often and they have worked very well for me. Two of my favorite books about Chakras and how they correspond to our body and behaviors are “Guaranteed Solutions” by Paramahamsa Nithyananda and “Chakra Meditation Transformation Trough The Seven Energy Centers Of The Body” by Layne Redmond.
